He previously worked for his father\u2019s travel company. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dawick&#8217;s great-uncle was the richest man in Canada.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When lacrosse fans want to know who owns a team, they are usually wondering if the owner has deep enough pockets to sustain a sports franchise in the long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m just not sure about Jamie Dawick. Unlike other owners in the NLL, he hasn\u2019t founded a successful business or worked for years at the top of a major company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, members of his wider family are seriously loaded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dawick\u2019s business background<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s difficult to find the source of Dawick\u2019s personal wealth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well before he was born, his father founded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uniglobeadvhouse.com\/aboutus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Adventure House Travel<\/a>. It\u2019s a successful tour operator and travel management operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jamie didn\u2019t attend university, but he worked in his father\u2019s business for some years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before he purchased the Toronto Rock, he owned a sports bar. I\u2019ve also seen references to him being involved in building custom houses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whatever these ventures were, they weren\u2019t high profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His sporadic career as a <a href=\"https:\/\/torontorock.com\/news\/dawick-ready-to-take-on-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">professional poker player<\/a> is easier to follow. He\u2019s been a long-time player at the World Series Poker event in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is that how he funded his purchase of a sports franchise?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hardly. Poker seems to be a hobby for him. Dawick told a newspaper that his career winnings were around $200K.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The puzzle for me is that it\u2019s not just that Jamie Dawick bought the Toronto Rock. As well as the purchase price, this comes with the ongoing <a href=\"https:\/\/greatsportsdome.com\/toronto-rock-player-salaries\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"704\">operational costs of player wages<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dawick also spent about $20 million on a new training facility for the team in Oakville (the Toronto Rock Athletic Center).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That can\u2019t be funded by running a sports bar and flipping a few houses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is another possible source of funds. Kenneth grew the business and expanded into television. He also joined a successful venture in the oil industry in Great Britain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Ken Thomson also spotted a potential downward trend in the newspaper industry. He sold the London Times and Sunday Times to Rupert Murdoch for a huge sum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Thomson corporation retained the Toronto Globe and Mail in their stable. They still own a large number of newspapers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bill_Watters_Former_Co-Owner\"><\/span>Bill Watters, Former Co-Owner<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Jamie Dawick purchased the Toronto Rock from a group of Canadian businessmen. They in turn had purchased the franchise in 1999.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before Bill Watters put together a group to buy the franchise, it was called the Toronto Raiders and was based in Hamilton. The group was comprised of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>Bill Watters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paul Beeston<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bobby Orr<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tie Domie<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Bill Watters was the Assistant General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leaf (in the NHL).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul Beeston was a former President of the Toronto Blue Jays (in the MLB).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bobby Orr is a legendary hockey player.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tie Domi\u2019s hockey career included a long stint with the Maple Leaf where he was known as a fierce enforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1999, Watters led this group in the purchase of the Toronto Raiders for $250K. They immediately moved the team to play at the Maple Leaf Gardens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also renamed the team as the Toronto Rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the Maple Leaf moved to what is now the Scotiabank Arena, the NLL team moved with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Canadian group had bought the team from Chris Fritz, a Kansas man with a deep involvement with the NLL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Chris_Fritz_Founder_of_the_Toronto_Raiders\"><\/span>Chris Fritz, Founder of the Toronto Raiders<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve arrived right at the beginning of the ownership history of the team that is now the Toronto Rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team was founded by Chris Fritz in 1998 as an NLL expansion team based in Hamilton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fritz had been an events promoter who promoted everything from heavy metal concerts to tractor-pulling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together with Russ Cline, he started a new box lacrosse league in 1987. The league has gone through a few name changes, but it is now the NLL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the beginning, Fritz and Cline held the majority stakes of every franchise in the league. This eventually changed to individual owners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are still some franchises that were founder members of the original league. This means they were also co-owned by Chris Fritz.
