Where Is The Cannons Lacrosse Team From? (2022)

This article takes an in-depth look at where the players at Cannons Lacrosse Club come from.

Do you know which players attended the same high school? Which players were NCAA teammates, and which were fierce conference rivals?

Cannons And The Tour-Based Model

The Premier Lacrosse League has a tour-based model with all the clubs coming together at weekends to the same venue.

This means that the Cannons Lacrosse Club doesn’t have a permanent base to call its home.

But you’d be wrong to think that the coaches don’t care where their players come from. The fastest way to establish a team culture in a young club is to have a core set of players who already know each other.

When the PLL was first set up, they had this to say about forming the teams:

…these teams have been built around players who have played in colleges together or played rivalries against each other…

Divya Goel, May 2019

Players have come and gone since the inaugural season. That is clear in our lists of the Cannons rosters since 2019. However, there is still a pattern at Cannons of higher representation from a few colleges and conferences.

Which Colleges Are Cannons Players From?

The above map shows the six states in the United States with alumni at Cannons. Just scan across for the Cannons logo!

The current team comes from twelve NCAA Division 1 colleges across these states.

Maryland and Towson are the highest-represented colleges with three alumni each on the roster.

Terrapins at Cannons

Interestingly, the three Maryland players all graduated in 2022. The trio has the benefit of having already played together at college level.

Bubba Fairman was selected in the 2022 college draft as eleventh choice. while Cannons took Matt Rahill from the player pool in the same season.

Jonathan Donville was acquired in late June 2022.

Tigers at Cannons

The three Towson University players are older than their Maryland teammates.

Ryan Drenner is the eldest, having graduated in 2017.

Zach Goodrich and Alex Woodall both graduated in 2019. Cannons picked Woodall from the player pool in 2022.

Goodrich was a three-time All-Star at Towson and captained the Tigers three years running. He signed with the Boston Cannons before they merged into the PLL.

In our review of salaries at the club, we estimate that he is one of the highest-earning Cannons players.

Other colleges at Cannons

These are the colleges that have one or two representatives at the club:

  • Albany
  • Canisius
  • Cornell
  • Georgetown
  • Hofstra
  • North Carolina
  • Notre Dame
  • Rutgers
  • Syracuse
  • Villanova

Former Rivals, Current Teammates

It may seem like having players from so many different colleges doesn’t make for a big percentage of the roster with prior history.

But the Maryland players at Cannons would have a traditional rivalry with Rutgers in the Big Ten Conference.

Adam Charlambides and Colin Kirst are both Rutgers alumni.

Kirst was selected by Cannons in the third round of the 2022 college draft. Charlambides was picked from the player pool in the same season.

We’ve already looked at the Towson University alumni. They played in the Colonial Conference, in which Hofstra University is a traditional rival.

The Hofstra players are Bryan McIntosh and Ryan Tierney. McIntosh was picked in the 2022 college draft, and Tierney joined Cannons in the prior season.

The two are younger than their teammates from Towson but would have been familiar with the Tigers reputations.

Hometowns and High Schools

We’ve looked at the colleges, but what about the players’ hometowns?

None of the Cannons players are from the same hometown.

However, two Ontario players attended the same high school.

Tyson Bell and Holden Garlent went to the Dennis Morris Catholic High School. With a five-year age difference, Bell was in his final years when Garlent was starting at the school.

Canadian Players At The Club

There are six Canadian players on the Cannons roster.

That doesn’t quite match the higher number at Chaos (you can check our article on where Cannons players are from).

All six Cannons players are from Ontario:

NameGrad year
Tyson Bell2015
Adam Charlambides2021
Jonathan Donville2022
Holden Garlent2020
Shayne Jackson2012
Brodie Merrill2005

Brodie Merrill is probably the standout Canadian player for Cannons.

He was an All-Star in 2021 and is one of the captains of the team.

Which PLL Owner Played For The Club?

Here’s a triva question: which of the many owners of the PLL played for Cannons?

The answer is Chris Hogan, who you might also know as a wide receiver for the Patriots with two championship rings to his name.

If you’re curious about how he played for the club in 2021, check up our article on who owns the Cannons Lacrosse Club (and the other clubs in the PLL). We’ve got a full section detailing Hogan’s brief but interesting history as a former player.
